Awards and Recognition

Õnne Kankainen

THE ADULT EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR IN PIRKANMAA IN 2002

On 11th  of November 2002 Õnne Kankainen received the certificate of honour of adult education week as a recognition for the work she has done in adult education in Pirkanmaa.

The motion was put forward by, among other people, the head co-ordinator of Immigrant issues Marja Nyrhinen who described Õnne Kankainen with following words:

Enterpriser, immigrant and Finnish language teacher Õnne Kankainen is the best. Õnne’s suggestopedic courses have instructed Finnish language learners from 65 countries and with good results. During the last ten years Onnenkieli courses have helped hundreds of immigrants to familiarise themselves with Finland. Moreover, early on Õnne has understood that just to follow a course is not enough; her students have taken the National Certificate of Jyväskylä University with good results. As an immigrant herself Õnne is familiar with the pitfalls of Finnish and knows the things that need to be studied in order to become a full member of Finnish society. Therefore the studying material used in her courses is composed by Õnne herself.  It has to be mentioned that even though there are only 15 available places in a Õnne’s course there are always over hundred of applicants for a course. Immigrants know where they receive high level education.

Moreover, Õnne Kankainen is a good example of immigrant survivor who has believed in her own business idea and her professional skills and founded a business (Onnenkieli Oy) and kept it running for over ten years.
